Travelling With Dogs - Havanese Spotlight
If you are looking for the perfect companion dogs for your Avida RV, you should certainly look at the Havanese breed.
These little lap dogs are originally from Cuba and they are somewhat rare in Australia but quite delightful! Havanese don’t shed their fur, they don't tend to be yappy and they are very smart. Many small dog breeds can be difficult to toilet train but a Havanese puppy is a joy to teach the basics. In fact, these clever little dogs can learn just about anything when you take them on the road!
"They don’t shed their fur and Havanese dogs do not tend to be yappy"
All this makes the Havanese a lot of fun for pet orientated RV owner. When you are travelling around in your Avida RV motorhome it can be a lot of fun to show off your cute doggy and their latest trick to other travellers. The dogs really love learning, and respond well to the ongoing stimulus from an egaged owner.
Havanese are also rather wonderful if you want a snuggly 'live' hot water bottle to love you unconditionally and warm your lap on a cold winter day. With your permission, your Havanese dog will slip into a lap dog role with pleasure. Havanese dogs adore being close to their owners and when not in your lap, they will trot around behind you as you go about your day.
These little guys adore their ‘pack’ and if you enjoy the company of a loving pet, Havanese dogs are sure to please; which is why the Havanese shine in an RV environment.
For example with an average weight of 5 - 8kg, Havanese are small enough that you can pick them up if you wander into a space that frowns on dogs. Havanese dogs also tend to be discreet when being carried. Of course if you give them lots of attention and a nice walk, they are also very happy to relax (AKA sleep) quietly in your motorhome for hours at a time while you are off exploring.
While Havanese do tend to be very quiet dogs, they make all kinds of funny noises to communicate what they want something and they can be VERY persistent. They grumble when they want to be fed, and are good at communicating if they want to be let outside too. This means you are unlikely to ever have unwanted ‘accidents’ with a Havanese in your RV.

The only thing to be aware of with Havanese dogs is they will not do well if continually left on their own without owner input. They are absolutely fine for an hour or two, and even the odd day alone will pass in a blissful dream if they have had a long morning walk or game of fetch, however Havanese thrive best when they can be with their owner most of each day. As such Havanese are great dogs for retirees who have lots of time to spend with their four legged friend.
A possible PLUS or MINUS depending on how you look at it is the fact Havanese do not shed. On the plus side, the do not leave excessive hair everywhere and generally smell very clean. On the other side, Havanese dogs require regular clipping and a good grooming routine. In hot weather, they do well with their fur short which is much easier to maintain but if you don't mind daily brushing, Havanese are also able to grow an impressive coats during winter time in Australia as pictured on this page.
Overall, Havanese are a smart and truly delightful companion dog for RV owners with lots of personality. Be gentle with them and they can learn anything; spend time with them often and they will love you like life itself.
